Is the x in F=-kx meters from equilibrium or from the springs natural length?

If a spring is 3m long and has a 8kg m attached to it and its new equilibrium is .8 meter from its natural length (its hanging vertically) then it is stretched an additional 1m. when we use the equation F = -kx will the x be the distance away from the equilibrium or the distance away from the springs natural length? is that the same for the work equation (W=0.5kx^2)?
